Time course of vascular resistance and venous oxygen changes following brief tetanus of dog skeletal muscle.

چکیده
The time courses of vascular resistance and venous blood oxygen (O2) saturation following a brief tetanus of isolated dog calf muscle were studied during free-flow (constant-pressure), high constant-flow (>30 ml/100 g min-), and low constant-flow (<24 ml/100 g mirr) perfusion. A monophasic decrease in resistance followed a 1-second tetanus during either free-flow or high constant-flow perfusion. The transient decrease in vascular resistance during high constant-flow perfusion returned to control before the return of the decrease in end-capillary oxygen tension. Thus, it seems unlikely that the vascular response to a brief tetanus during free-flow or high constant-flow perfusion was controlled by a factor related to oxidative metabolism. A biphasic resistance response followed a brief tetanus during low constant-flow perfusion. This vascular response had a longer duration than the response during free-flow or high constant-flow perfusion. It returned to control with approximately the same time course as that for tissue O2 consumption and could therefore be controlled by factors related to oxidative metabolism. These findings support the hypothesis that exercise hyperemia is due to multiple factors. Moreover, they indicate that, under the conditions of free-flow perfusion or high constant-flow perfusion, the vascular response to a brief tetanus is not solely controlled by factors directly associated with tissue oxidative metabolism.

Role of potassium ions in the vascular response to a brief tetanus.
Changes in the plasma potassium ion (K) concentration in the venous effluent of isolated dog tibialis cranialis and extensor digitorum longus muscles were measured following 1 second of tetanic exercise (32 impulses/sec) during constant-flow perfusion. After a brief delay, venous plasma K concentration increased to a peak change of 0.23 ± 0.02 mEq/liter and then returned to the control level wi...

متن کاملResistance and venous oxygen dynamics during sinusoidal exercise of dog skeletal muscle.
We observed the response of vascular resistance and venous oxygen (O2) saturation to sinusoidally modulated continuous exercise of the isolated dog calf. Stimulus frequency was varied sinusoidally between 0.5 Hz and 1 Hz with modulation frequencies ranging from 0.005 Hz to 0.05 Hz. Venous O2 responses were corrected for dispersion due to vascular and catheter transit. As modulation frequency wa...

The effects of reduction in perfusion pressure, arterial hypoxia, muscle contraction, and adrenergic stimulation on the hindlimb muscle circulation were studied. Under normal conditions (venous PO2 greater than or equal to 40 mm Hg), oxygen delivery to the muscle was maintained mainly by large increases in the capillary exchange capacity and the oxygen extraction ratio in accord with tissue dem...

MOHRMAN, DAVID E., AND HARVEY V. SPARKS. Myogenic hyperemia following brief tetanus of canine skeletal muscle. Am. J. Physiol. 227(3) : 531-535. We have tested the hypothesis that a portion of the vasodilatory response to brief (1 s) tetanus could be initiated by the rapid alterations in extravascular pressure and in vascular transmural pressure associated with muscle contraction. Dogs were ane...
